Which type of tuition is best for YOUR child?

I specialise in English (GCSE, Common Entrance & Scholarship, including preparation for ISEB tests) & Maths (for SATs / end of Year 6). For other subjects, please contact me.

Every child is unique and deserves a well-planned education that is tailored to their individual needs. Making the most of opportunities for learning ensures that your child fulfils their potential and is well prepared for their next steps – this is where tuition can really help.

There is no ‘one size fits all’, but tuition usually falls into one of these categories:

1 - Ongoing, regular support with a particular subject

2 - A targeted, short-term intervention to help with a specific need

3 - Preparation for a specific examination e.g. 11+, Common Entrance, Scholarship

4 - Help with study skills, organisation and mentoring

Why choose James?

I am a highly skilled and experienced teacher with experience in both independent prep and state primary schools. I have also worked at an inspirational, innovative school in New Zealand (where we used the International Baccalaureate).

I have a track record of outstanding pupil progress, with my classes and students doing very well in 11+, SATs, Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations.

In my roles of Specialist Leader of Education (Literacy) and Kent County Moderator I have been responsible for assessing pupils’ work across Kent. As Head of English and Deputy Head (Academic) in a leading prep school, I led various aspects of school improvement and was responsible for delivering training to teachers.

I have an Enhanced Certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service. This is the same level of check for any teacher working with children and young people.

Testimonials

Without your tutoring, he certainly wouldn't be going to Cranbrook! We are lucky to have had your help; our heartfelt thanks.
We cannot recommend James highly enough. For a pupil who struggles with English, he made it enjoyable and put in an enormous amount of background work. Through patience, encouragement and positivity, the change was miraculous. James tailored his teaching and taught a very structured approach which helped to demystify the subject. My son was always keen to go to his lessons and found every lesson extremely helpful. James is a truly amazing teacher.

We are delighted to let you know that M achieved a Grade 9 for his English Literature GCSE. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for all your excellent tuition and support.
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your contribution to my children’s English, particularly ****. At the end of Year 3 he was never ever going to put pen to paper, but somehow you transformed him into a huge lover of the subject. He reads like nobody else I know and spends his spare time writing. He actually asked for a typewriter this last Christmas, so most weekends you’ll find him in his room pecking away. He always has a notebook on the go with story ideas. He honestly is not the same child!
The tuition for the 11+ was invaluable. Her confidence – and scores – increased visibly, session by session. The pass was a vindication of all the hard work. Thank you so much.
I just wanted to write and say how pleased we are with ****’s progress. He now really looks forward to English and feels so much more confident. What a difference!
I will never be able to thank you enough for what you did with ****, not just on the academic front, but you turned him into a confident student who believed in his ability. Thank you. Whenever I think of Growth Mindset, I always think of you.
